Return to insights You are reading: Our WeBuild, WePartner & WeTrade Framework

Our Three Tiers

WeAct’s operations fall under a three-tier delivery framework that defines how we engage with projects and subsequently act as a due diligence framework that dictates the types of project information we can provide to the market. These tiers include:

  1. WeBuild: WeAct-owned & operated flagship projects with communities at the centre.
  2. WePartner: Technical project services provided to other project owners.
  3. WeTrade: High quality carbon credits screened and procured from global markets.

These three categories differentiate:

  • the level of project risk that we take on as project owner, service provider, or procurer);
  • the extent to which we directly or indirectly engage with project communities;
  • the depth of project and/or delivery partner information we can access; and
  • the level of data that we can provide publicly to the market.

The below table sets out the high-level differences between our three project delivery tiers.

The three WeBuild, WeParter and WeTrade tiers are outlined in more detail below – including both project delivery and client due diligence attributes.

Our WeBuild portfolio includes our flagship Madagascar Clean Cookstove Project.

WeBuild

This is our highest quality tier of projects, and allows us to provide full “paddock to plate” transparency and project information to the market and clients.

Project Delivery

As project owner we have decision-making control over our WeBuild projects (in collaboration with community partners), and hold direct FPIC and project implementation agreements with landowners and communities involved. Our WeBuild projects include:

  • projects originated, developed and owned by WeAct.
  • upfront capital investment in project origination.
  • WeAct acts as the project owner with projects registered under its name.
  • local teams embedded in-country to ensure full engagement.
  • WeAct bears the financial risk for the project as project proponent. Carbon rights are shared between Landholders/Communities & WeAct, with clear benefits-sharing arrangements in place (as set out in our Carbon+ model).
  • projects origination/implementation are let by Country & Technical teams, including:
    • Community engagement and Free Prior & Informed Consent;
    • Pre-feasibility & feasibility;
    • Project planning & Carbon+ benefits sharing arrangements;
    • Project registration & documentation;
    • Project implementation with in-country team and local partners;
    • Measurement, reporting & verification processes;
    • Managing issuance and sale of credits; and
    • Ongoing relationship management with communities/landowners.

Client Due Diligence

Owning and operating our own projects means we have access to all data and information and can share this transparently with our clients. This provides our highest level of accountability to clients and the market, and includes:

  • full access to project information from initial scoping and origination through to current activities;
  • site visits available;
  • regular project updates; and
  • commercial opportunities for clients include:
    • Direct investment opportunities;
    • Spot Trade & Forward Contracts available; and
    • Available for inclusion in portfolio-based procurement options.

Our WePartner portfolio includes technical services provided to small scale wind and solar projects across India.

WePartner

Our middle tier of projects, that allows us (as service providers) to provide significant transparency and project information from project owners to the market and clients.

Project Delivery

As a third party project partner, we provide services and advice, but do not hold decision-making control over the project, nor do we hold the direct FPIC agreements with landholders. In our WePartner project services, WeAct:

  • acts as a medium to long-term project advisor and/or service provider.
  • bears limited financial project risk as it is not the project owner.
  • seeks for carbon rights are shared separately between Landholders/Communities and the project owner, and are not part of WeAct’s engagement with the project.
  • WeAct supports the project owner to operate the project by undertaking project-specific technical, advisory and commercial work, including:
    • Project registration processing & documentation;
    • Measurement, reporting & verification activities (including managing audit processes);
    • Managing credit issuance; and/or
    • Ongoing relationships to sell credits on behalf of project owners.

Client Due Diligence

As a third party project partner, we provide services and advice, but do not hold full decision-making control over the project, nor do we hold the direct FPIC agreements with landholders. This provides a significant level of accountability to clients and the market, and includes:

  • access to ongoing project information and technical data, however as a service provider we cannot provide full details on project-owner specific issues if they are private & confidential (e.g. landholder agreements etc, project owner financial documents etc);
  • significant levels of project information and data across registration MRV and crediting;
  • site visits not available;
  • annual project updates; and
  • commercial client opportunities include:
    • Spot trade & forward contracts available only; and
    • Available for inclusion in portfolio-based procurement options.

Our WeTrade portfolio includes a range of pre-screened, high quality projects from around the world.

WeTrade

Our standard tier of projects, that enables us (as market traders) to screen and share publicly available project information about the carbon credits we procure and bring to market.

Project Delivery

As an independent third party, we source credits from projects and so do not have any direct delivery connection to the project (no project-decision making or agreements with project owners or landholders/communities).

Client Due Diligence

WeAct provide access to global carbon markets and provides high quality credits and general project information, including:

  • undertaking standard WeTrade due diligence, including screening for environmental integrity, community and other related risks.
  • Commercial client opportunities include:
    • Spot Trade & Forward Contracts available; and
    • Available for inclusion in portfolio-based procurement options.
